  • Dual Nature: Light is famously a paradox – it behaves as both a wave (like ripples on water) and a particle (called a photon). This wave-particle duality is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics!

  • The Ultimate Speed Limit: The speed of light in a vacuum (approximately 299,792,458 meters per second or 186,282 miles per second) is the fastest anything in the universe can travel. If you could travel at the speed of light, you could circle the Earth 7.5 times in one second!

  • Invisible Colors: The light we see (visible light) is just a tiny sliver of the full electromagnetic spectrum. Beyond red are infrared, microwaves, and radio waves. Heat is the total energy transferred between objects due to a temperature difference. A bathtub full of lukewarm water has more total heat energy than a single drop of boiling water, even though the drop has a higher temperature!

  • Three Ways to Transfer: Heat can move in three ways:

    • Conduction: Direct contact (e.g., touching a hot stove).

    • Convection: Movement of fluids (e.g., boiling water, warm air rising).

    • Radiation: Electromagnetic waves (e.g., feeling the warmth of the sun or a campfire from a distance).

  • Absolute Zero: The coldest possible temperature is absolute zero (0 Kelvin or -273.15°C), where all atomic motion theoretically stops. While we can get incredibly close in labs, reaching absolute zero is practically impossible.

  • Vibrations in a Medium: Sound is created by vibrations. When something vibrates, it causes the particles around it to vibrate too, creating a chain reaction that travels as a wave. These waves need a medium (like air, water, or solids) to travel through.

  • Speed Varies: The speed of sound depends on the medium it travels through. Sound travels much faster in water than in air, and even faster in solids like steel, because the particles are closer together and transmit vibrations more efficiently.

  • Infrasound and Ultrasound: We can only hear sounds within a certain frequency range. Sounds below our hearing range are called infrasound (used by elephants to communicate, or produced by earthquakes). Sounds above our hearing range are ultrasound (used by bats for echolocation, or in medical imaging).

  • The Sun is King: Ultimately, most of Earth's energy (both current and historical) originates from the Sun.   • Fossil Fuels: Coal, oil, and natural gas are formed over millions of years from the buried remains of ancient organisms. They are non-renewable because they take too long to regenerate.

  • Renewable Energy: These sources replenish naturally and relatively quickly.

    • Solar: Harnessing sunlight directly (photovoltaics).
